Not Mirror
2022
We have successfully built a functional prototype of the solution and received positive feedback from experts and users at RISD and Brown. The prototype has demonstrated potential for further iteration and refinement to achieve the desired reliability and aesthetic. Our team aims to address the limitations of existing solutions by designing a product that integrates seamlessly into users' daily routines without increasing their emotional and cognitive load. The positive response from the students during a pitch event at Brown shows a high demand for such a solution in the market.
Take a look in the mirror. Have you ever rushed out the door in the morning and forgotten nearly all of your essential items? No wallet. No keys. Does this resemble you?
The constant sense of urgency leaves us unfulfilled and unable to focus on the people and experiences that we care about. Research shows that the average person spends 10 minutes/day looking for misplaced items - a waste of time and energy. Current solutions, including many devices and applications, demand the users' full attention which strains their emotional and cognitive load.
Designed by an interdisciplinary team, "Not Mirror" is a low key smart device that integrates low-tech, noninvasive technology with color psychology to serve as an ambient reminder for all your last-minute essentials. It is the beginning of an ecosystem of in-home products that create a seamless, meaningful relationship between technology and users.
We hope our design can reshape a future where humans and technology work together harmoniously while alleviating universal problems.
In the course of our research, we discovered the phenomenon of "Hurry Sickness," a mixture of anxiety and restlessness, usually accompanied by a constant sense of urgency, which usually occurs at the last minute before people leave the house in the morning. So we shifted our focus to the last minute experiences people have before they leave the house each day.
An insurance company studied that the average American spends 2.5 days each year looking for items collectively costing households $2.7 billion dollars annually. We developed user research to identify the needs of people before they leave the house. They want to check the weather, grab their keys and turn off the lights. In addition, people prefer to keep all essentials, such as wallets, all in the same place at the entryway.
The Research insights led us to develop Not Mirror, an at-home device “designed for the last minute”. While people can use alarms on their phone or storage containers to remember their keys. Alarms are aggravating, often ignored, while storage only works if you remember to use it.
We were inspired by the sunset and wanted to create a product with a natural feeling.
The color above represents the daytime temperature, the bottom represents the nighttime temperature, and a circle of blue around it represents the possibility of rainfall.
